Common Signs of Roof Damage

September 5, 2017

Even if you look at your roof every day, If you do not know what you are looking for, you will never find anything wrong with it. If you learn how to identify roof problems, this can potentially save you from spending a lot of money. We have tallied up the most common signs of roof damage and this will tell you whether or not you need to buy a new roof or repair the one that you already have.

Buckling

Buckling happens when your roof is not properly installed or ventilation is not taking place. This can also happen when old shingles are not taken out when new ones are installed in. If you notice that buckling is present in a lot of places, then you might have to need a new roof.

Shingles

If you find yourself walking out of the house and seeing the loose shingles in the yard, then you have a serious problem. When you see this, you will definitely have to get a new roof.

Sagging Ceiling

When you are checking up on your roof, make sure you try to spot any sagginess inside and outside of the home. A sagging ceiling is an indicator that there is water damage present, which is most likely caused by roof leaks. If you have an attic, make sure that you check up on that too. Water damage is most visible in the attic as this is where water leaks are very common in roof damages.

Rotting Shingles

If you notice that your shingles have holes or show clear signs of corrosion, more often than not, rotting is also taking place in parts of the roof that cannot be seen. It is important to repair or replace your roof right away if this happens.

Algae and Moss

When you are inspecting your roof for any damages, make sure that you check if discoloration is present. This may be due to moss and algae that are growing on your roof shingles. This can be a tell-tale sign of a problem because these two will only grow if there is moisture trapped in your roof. Making sure that your roof is properly moisture-resistant will prevent it from leaking. Once you do notice any algae, make sure you call someone right away to have it treated to prevent further damage.

Termites

Check for termites above the roofing insulation and just below the shingles because these are the best places for them to breed. They are nasty creatures for your roofs because they will eat away at your roof supports and they are usually very hard to get rid of.
