Do You Really Need a New Roof?

March 5, 2018

Your roof. Having one over your head is, perhaps, one of the most important (and sometimes exciting) aspects of our lives. However, it quickly becomes something we barely think of since we barely even look at it. We expect it to tirelessly be there, protecting us from the elements and giving us that sense of security we need to feel.

But what happens when we take a closer look is a different story entirely. Your roof fights a war day and night against an onslaught of enemies to protect you. Weather, insects, rodents, and debris are an endless army intent on breaking through your roof and into your home or business. Eventually, that war can take its toll on your roof. Here are some helpful signs that your roof needs your help to keep fighting that war.

How long has your roof been doing its job?

When we first purchase our building or home, it’s very common that we assume that the roof is the same age as the house. Even then, we often don’t take into consideration how long the typical asphalt shingle roof should last. However, more importantly, we often don’t think to ask if the roofing was ever fully replaced, or whether it was just layered on top of another layer of shingles. If the latter was the case, and your roof is 20 years old or older, then chances are you need to replace your roof.

If it’s not flat, it’s not good.

Take a good look at your shingles, especially where the sunlight hits them the most. Do they seem warped or buckling? Do you see any “balding” spots where granules are being lost? Shingles have what you may call a life expectancy, wherein the granules will only stay adhered to the shingle for so long. Another concern is that the roof itself may be defective. If you suspect this is the case, contact a licensed roofing contractor right away to see if you qualify for options such as reimbursement.
